Impact
Thirty years ago this day, the great Liberace, the omnipresent and eccentric entertainer, passed away. I remember Liberace being a household name, a must-see act when visiting Las Vegas.
As a child, I remember the billboards in Vancouver featuring a bigger-than-life, gaudy and glitzy Liberace and myself wondering how to pronounce the name and how important he must be.
A radio feature this morning referred to the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas having closed in 2010 due to waning visitor numbers. Liberace's motto "too much of a good thing is wonderful" seems ironic in light of a legacy that seems to have bleached to near oblivion in the unforgiving and iconoclastic light of the Nevada sun.
Th notion that the great Liberace has been nearly forgotten after a mere generation, sobered me this morning and reminded of the temporality and ultimate insignificance of many things I do and believe have importance and impact today.
I cannot speak for any other than myself. My question I ask myself is, what will be left of my legacy after light has been shed on that short dash representing my earthly existence between my birth year 1959 and the year of my passing, 20xx engraved on my tombstone.
What will have been the impact I have made on people around me, my loved ones, friends, neighbours, work associates, seminar participants and coachees?
What, after the dust has settled, remains?
